New Birth Registration Application (Bangladesh)

Last updated: August 9, 2026

Birth registration is the official government record of a person's birth, and the 17-digit number from it is needed for a passport, NID, school admission, and much more. This guide covers how to apply for a brand-new registration online. If your certificate already exists but has a mistake, see our correction guide instead; to check an existing record, use the form on our verification homepage.

What you need before you start

  • The child's or person's full name in both Bangla and English
  • The exact date of birth
  • The parents' NID numbers and, where they have one, their own birth registration numbers
  • Permanent and present address details
  • A working mobile number, for the OTP verification step

Documents required

  • The child's EPI (vaccination) card, or a hospital birth/discharge certificate
  • The parents' National ID (NID) cards
  • A holding tax or house tax receipt as proof of address; if you do not have one, a certificate from the local Union Parishad chairman or ward councillor is usually accepted instead

How to apply for a new birth registration online

  1. Go to bdris.gov.bd/br/application.
  2. Select the address where the birth is being registered (the relevant Union, Pourashava, or City Corporation).
  3. Enter the name in both Bangla and English, the date of birth, and the number of children the parents have.
  4. Fill in the parents' information and the address details.
  5. Upload the required documents.
  6. Review the application carefully, since the applicant certifies that the information is correct.
  7. Verify with the OTP code sent to the mobile number, then submit.

Government fee

  • Within 45 days of birth: free, no government fee
  • 46 days to 5 years: ৳25
  • After age 5: ৳50

Fees are occasionally revised, so confirm the current amount on the portal or at your local office before you pay.

After you submit online

Print the completed application and take it to your local Union Parishad, Pourashava, or City Corporation office along with the fee and original documents for verification. If everything checks out, the office typically issues the certificate within about a week, though busier offices can take longer.

Check your application status

  1. Go to bdris.gov.bd/br/application/status.
  2. Choose the application type.
  3. Enter the birth registration number (or application ID) from your submission receipt.
  4. Click "View" to see the current status.

After you get the certificate

Keep the 17-digit birth registration number somewhere safe. You can verify it online anytime on the official portal, and if you later spot a mistake, our correction guide covers how to fix it.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Do I need a hospital birth to register?
No. Home births can be registered too, using the EPI vaccination card or another accepted proof of birth instead of a hospital certificate.
Can I register a birth without the parents' NID?
Parents' NID is increasingly required, especially for recent births. If a parent does not have an NID yet, ask your local registration office what alternative proof they will accept.
Is online birth registration free?
It is free if you register within 45 days of birth. After that, a small government fee applies: ৳25 up to age 5, and ৳50 after age 5.
How long does it take to get the certificate after applying?
If the information and documents are correct, most offices issue the certificate within about a week of your visit, though it can take longer at busier offices.
Can I register a birth that happened abroad?
Bangladeshi missions and consulates handle registration for births abroad. Contact your nearest embassy or consulate rather than applying directly through bdris.gov.bd.
I have an old handwritten certificate with no 17-digit number. Do I file a new application?
No, that record already exists; it just needs to be digitized. Visit your local registration office to have the existing record entered into the digital system instead of filing a fresh application. See the 16 to 17 digits section for details.
