Birth Certificate Correction in Bangladesh

If your birth registration has a misspelled name, the wrong date of birth, wrong parents' details, or an old address, you can request a correction online through the government's BDRIS system. This guide walks through the whole process. When you need a correction
- A misspelled name, in Bangla, English, or both
- The wrong date of birth
- Wrong or missing parents' names or details
- The wrong gender recorded
- An address that changed or was entered incorrectly
- English spelling that does not match the passport or NID
How to apply for a correction online
- Go to bdris.gov.bd/br/correction on your phone or computer.
- Enter the 17-digit birth registration number and date of birth to search for the record. If your certificate still has an old 16-digit number, it needs digitizing first; see the 16 to 17 digits section on our homepage.
- Open the record and select which field or fields you want to correct.
- Type the corrected information carefully, and confirm the birthplace, permanent, and present address fields while you are there.
- Upload clear photos or scans of the supporting documents for that correction (see below).
- Enter the applicant's details and verify with the OTP code sent to the mobile number.
- Submit the application, then download or print the copy. Most offices still need a signed printed copy along with the fee.
Documents you may need
The exact document depends on what you are correcting:
- Name or parents' details: the applicant's and parents' National ID (NID) cards
- Date of birth: an educational certificate, medical or hospital record, or vaccination (EPI) card as proof
- Parents' information: the parents' marriage certificate, where relevant
- Major name changes: a notarized affidavit is often required
- Address: a holding tax receipt or a certificate from the local chairman or ward councillor

Correction fee
The fee is paid at your local Union Parishad, Pourashava, or City Corporation office after you submit the application online, not on the bdris.gov.bd website itself. It is normally a modest amount, commonly in the ৳50 to ৳100 range, and it depends on what you are correcting and your local office's rules. Government fees can change, so confirm the exact amount with your office before you submit.
How long a correction takes
Simple corrections, like a spelling fix, are often approved within a few days to about two weeks. Bigger changes, such as a different date of birth or a major name change, can take longer because the office may ask for extra verification or approval from a higher authority.
Check your correction application status
- Go to bdris.gov.bd/br/application/status.
- Choose the application type (correction).
- Enter your birth registration number and the application ID from your submission receipt.
- Click "View" to see the current status.
After the correction is approved
Once approved, collect the updated certificate from your local office. You can then verify the corrected details online on the official portal to make sure everything now matches.
